The problem with not smoking…

It’s now been over nine weeks since I last had a cigarette… 67 days or something.

A few weeks ago, I noticed that some cheese seemed to have gone off. Or, at least, I thought that it had gone off. It smelt and tasted disgusting.

So I threw my normally tasty cheese & Marmite rolls in the bin. And also threw the remaining cheese in the bin too. OK, there was no mould on it, but hey – it stank!

And so then the next week, I had a bacon sandwich, with cheese. And even though it was a nice new block of cheese, only recently opened… it stank again, and tasted funny. I ate it in sufferance (not throwing a bacon sarnie in the bin!).

In the bin went the remaining cheese, again…

Then a few days later, Ally cooked a bolognese. We had cheese with it. Again, a nice new block, only recently opened.

I sat there, eating my dinner, trying not to be put off by the disgusting smell of the cheese or the horrible taste. Looked at Ally… she was eating her dinner, and made no complaints about the cheese.

Perplexed, I asked her if the cheese smelt or tasted strange to her.

She replied that it was exactly the same as it always was, in taste and smell.

Realisation dawned that it was not that the cheese had gone off… it was actually that my senses of taste and smell had improved without the cigarettes to dull them anymore.

Ooops. How much cheese did I throw away?

This now means I have to buy milder cheese than before… no more Irish Mature Cheddar for me anymore, it has to be Medium or something.
