So… I think I should have gone to see The Dark Knight a 2nd time instead of seeing this.
Two words: Lame. Disappointing.
I loved the series. I watched it from the very beginning on Sky 1, and again on the Beeb. I had most on VHS, and have the complete seasons 1-9 + “Fight the Future” (1st movie) DVD box set.
It’s been six years since the series ended. Six years for Chris Carter and co. to come up with a decent and worthwhile return to the big screen for Mulder and Scully. And yet THIS is all they could come up with?! This, in my opinion, average and mediocre non-arc episode stretched out to feature length?…OK, maybe I’ll be generous… this, IMO, mediocre TV movie….
While it’s very good to see Mulder and Scully again, I felt that the reason for their return was pathetic. It’s so lame. They’ve been on the run for 6 years (well, I say “on the run”, but Scully is working at a hospital under her own name, while a beardy Mulder works out of a room in their house), and Mulder should still surely have a military-imposed death sentence hanging over him… and yet some Assistant Special Agent in Charge (ASAC) at the FBI is somehow able to make it so that “All is forgiven” (yes, those words are used!) and all charges are dropped etc., simply ‘cos she wants Mulder’s help with a psychic paedo-priest who claims he can help the Bureau find a missing Agent. How in the hell can a mere ASAC clear all charges against Mulder, simply out of needing his help in that? And even if she could somehow clear the FBI side, how could she clear the whole military death-sentence side of it? LAME.
And I think the story is lame & a bit boring. Nothing worthy of a movie, IMO.
Leoben from BSG is a Russian organ smuggler or something, along with his freaky-looking husband [in the State of Massachusetts] and some other Russians. The freaky husband is dying of cancer, so Leoben and the other Russians have been kidnapping young women with the aim of using their bodies to give the freaky-looking Russian a head/body transplant…yes, they want to stick his head on the kipnapped woman’s body…
I found it lame, not particularly interesting, and nothing special. Certainly nothing worth waiting SIX DAMN YEARS FOR.
The secondary story, regarding Scully and some little dying boy in the hospital was to me simply a load of pointless filler, to stretch out the movie as the main story presumably couldn’t fill the run time. OK, maybe it was intended to be an important part of the movie, to deal with Scully’s faith etc.. But to me it came across as boring filler. And Scully’s faith has been dealt with far better in the TV series.
Oh, and of course the “Shipper” numpties get what they want…
There is one brief mention of William. That’s it. One mention.
Skinner is in it briefly. He seems to still be in a position of power back at Washington, so is presumably still an AD or maybe higher.
And the end-credits…WTF…Mulder & Scully in a little boat on holiday or something, waving up at the camera???…
There are also little bits that seem like maybe they’re done for laughs, but they’re simply utter crap, such as the theme music playing over a pic of Dubya and J Edgar Hoover, outside an office at FBI HQ.
So, overall… I found it a massive let down
