So… major update time.
The day of my last entry, 20th Jan, my (now ex-) housemates and I each received a letter from our (now ex-) landlord.
Earlier that week, one of my housemates (the one who looked up all the legal stuff) sent a letter to the landlord, politely & formally putting in writing the various complaints, as is standard procedure. The disruption from the building work, the lack of facilities, the whole gas thing, etc.
So, the landlord sent us each a letter in reply.
Various complete & utter bullshit responses to each point from the complaint letter, ending with…eviction.
He gave us 11 days notice to get out of the house. Said we had to leave by 31st January, if we wanted our deposit back at all. Said if we stayed after 31st January, we’d have to pay full rent, & would, by some form of twisted & bullshit logic, be liable for any damage to the house or to 3rd parties (I don’t see how he came up with that one…it’s his house, his buildings insurance, his dodgy construction work).
And so began the rush to find somewhere else.
The legal housemate had already managed to find somewhere else, as he’d already had enough & started looking anyway. He moved out soon after the dodgy eviction letter.
The other two – who ended up a couple, one nice outcome from the hellhouse – found somewhere after a couple of days, & moved the following weekend, final weekend of January.
I started looking for somewhere with Ally…earlier than originally planned, but we were going to do it soon enough anyway in another month.
After a frantic search, we managed to find somewhere, paid the deposit, filled in all the forms, & got a moving in date of 31st January. Really nice one-bedroom flat, in a nice area.
Packed up all my stuff on the final weekend of January, & Ally & I both took Tuesday 31st off work.
Moved all my stuff, & some of Ally’s, on that Tuesday, with the help of my Dad (who’d luckily been able to get the day off work to help…if he hadn’t, we’d have been screwed) & a rental van.
Also took the Wednesday off, & used it to unpack stuff & sort things out.
Moved the rest of Ally’s stuff over the next several evenings (she didn’t have to move all her stuff out until the middle of Feb, so we’d concentrated on getting my stuff out first as I had the tight deadline).
First weekend of Feb we went to Dublin for the weekend. Went on the Saturday, & came back on the Monday.
Very nice place, loads to see, lovely people. Took some good pics, will try & get them online then I have a chance.
We had another trip the final weekend of Feb, the weekend of our six month anniversary – a weekend in New York! Brilliant time. So cool. Loads more pics, will also try & get them online when I have a chance.
Work hasn’t been too bad recently…quite busy, due to having fuck-all staff, but not too much hassle from above though.
The flat’s still good. Took a while for us to settle in & get everything sorted, due to both being busy & due to going away a couple of times.
Ex-house situation…
Ex-landlord wrote to us all 3 weeks after we left, saying we won’t get the deposit back, & giving a whole list of crap explanations for why.
We’re writing back…in a lot of detail…And if he still won’t pay up then we will have to take the bastard to the County Court under the Small Claims Track. CAB advisor said we’re right & he was wrong, City Council’s Tenancy Relations Officer said we’re right & he was wrong, anyone with a brain would see we’re right & he’s in the wrong. So the saga continues…
